Riverway Stadium (Townsville) — North Queensland’s AFL Outpost
Riverway Stadium in Townsville is the AFL’s North Queensland outpost, and it’s a venue most southern fans couldn’t find on a map. A 11,000-seat boutique ground in tropical Townsville, surrounded by sugarcane fields and the kind of Queensland heat that makes Brisbane feel temperate, Riverway hosts Gold Coast Suns “home” games on rotation and produces some of the toughest tropical conditions in Australian sport. The AFL’s North Queensland push has been steady but limited; Riverway is its centrepiece.
The History: Townsville’s Sporting Hub
Riverway Sports Complex was developed in the 2000s as a multi-sport facility in Townsville’s southern suburbs. The site was selected for proximity to the Ross River (hence “Riverway”) and integration with adjacent residential communities. The AFL footprint at the venue grew from one-off promotional games in the late 2000s to a permanent Suns rotation from 2011 onwards.
The naming has remained stable as Riverway Stadium since opening. Major upgrades:
- 2011: AFL infrastructure added including modern broadcast facilities and goalposts.
- 2018: Capacity expansion to ~11,000 with new grandstand.
- 2024: Modernisation of corporate facilities for AFL standards.
Capacity: ~11,000, mid-range for AFL boutique venues.
The Footy: Suns’ North Queensland Rotation
The Gold Coast Suns play one or two “home” games per season at Riverway Stadium, alternating with Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns. The arrangement is part of the AFL’s North Queensland strategy and the Suns’ broader Queensland brief. Crowds typically fill the venue (10,000+) for marquee fixtures.
The pitch is ~150m × 130m, AFL-standard but on the smaller end. Surface: tropical couch grass with rye over-seeding for the AFL season. Drainage handles the Townsville wet season well, but the playing surface is softer in March-April when monsoonal rain hits.

The Tropical Conditions
Townsville’s tropical conditions are similar to Cairns — hot, humid, and unforgiving in the third quarter. AFL fixtures at Riverway are scheduled for May/June (the dry season) but ambient temperatures still typically exceed 28°C with 70% humidity. Visiting teams from southern Australia routinely cramp up; the home advantage is meaningful.
The Stadium Itself
Riverway Stadium is a tight, modern North Queensland boutique ground. The eastern grandstand is the primary covered seating; the western and southern stands offer modern but compact facilities. The grass embankment on the northern end seats 2,500+ standing — Townsville locals fill it on game day.
Transport is car-only; the venue is about 8km from Townsville CBD. Public transport is bus-only. The drive from Townsville Airport is about 18 minutes.

The Rumours
The persistent rumour: capacity expansion to 15,000+. Has been mentioned in Queensland state planning documents; funding has not been secured.
The other rumour: Cowboys-Suns sharing infrastructure. Both clubs use Riverway for some fixtures; deeper sharing arrangements have been canvassed.
The wildcard: Brisbane Lions secondary games at Riverway. Has been mentioned in long-term AFL strategy. Nothing formal.
The Verdict
Riverway Stadium is the AFL’s tropical North Queensland frontier. The conditions are brutal; the supporter base is small but loyal; and the venue does what it needs to do for one or two Suns home fixtures per year. If you’re visiting Townsville for the Great Barrier Reef or the local NRL scene, work an AFL fixture into your trip. Tropical footy is its own experience, and Riverway is one of the most authentic places to encounter it.
