Sydney’s Big Review: When the Swans Go Looking for Answers

Sydney have announced an independent review into their football program, and if you’ve followed footy for more than about ten minutes you already know the drill — three stated objectives, a panel of credible outsiders, and a promise that no stone will go unturned. I’ve seen this movie before. Richmond fans have practically got a loyalty card for club reviews.

The Swans say the review will look broadly at the football department in the wake of the latest off-field saga to rattle the joint. I won’t relitigate the specifics here because, frankly, that’s not really the point of this column — the point is what happens next, and whether “extensive review” ends up meaning anything more than a glossy document that gets filed somewhere between the member surveys and the canteen menu.

Reviews are the footy world’s favourite panic button

Every club has one in the bottom drawer. Something goes pear-shaped — on field, off field, in the boardroom — and out comes the review. It’s become almost a reflex action, like a GP prescribing panadol for whatever ails you. Headache? Panadol. Soft tissue strain? Panadol. Football club in strife? Independent review.

To be fair to Sydney, they’re not doing anything unusual by commissioning one. Plenty of clubs have gone down this path over the years, Richmond included, and some of those reviews genuinely led to meaningful change. Others were essentially a very expensive way of saying
