Cazaly’s Stadium (Cairns) — Far North Queensland’s AFL Home
Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns is a 13,000-seat boutique footy ground named after Roy Cazaly himself, the bloke immortalised in “Up There Cazaly” — the song every footy supporter knows even if they couldn’t tell you why. Built in tropical Far North Queensland, surrounded by mango trees and the Coral Sea breeze, Cazaly’s hosts a handful of AFL home games each season for the Gold Coast Suns and produces one of the most unique atmospheres in the league. Tropical footy in Cairns is its own cultural experience, and Cazaly’s is the venue at its centre.
The History: Naming a Ground After a Legend
Cazaly’s Stadium was developed in 2000 as part of Cairns’ regional sports infrastructure. The site is in the suburb of Westcourt, about 4km from Cairns CBD, surrounded by tropical residential areas. Capacity at opening was approximately 13,500 with grass embankments expanding the standing total.
The naming honours Roy Cazaly (1893–1963), the South Melbourne and St Kilda ruckman whose high-flying mark spawned the song “Up There Cazaly” — written by Mike Brady in 1979 and now played at every AFL Grand Final. Naming a Far North Queensland ground after a Melbourne footy legend is one of those quirky AFL decisions that, once you accept it, makes perfect sense.
The Footy: Suns + AFLW
The Gold Coast Suns play one or two “home” AFL games per season at Cazaly’s, an arrangement dating back to the Suns’ 2011 inaugural year. AFLW fixtures have used the venue for a Suns-hosted regular season game (when scheduling permits). The AFL’s regional Queensland push has been steady but limited; the venue handles the volume well.
The pitch is ~155m × 130m, AFL-standard. Surface: tropical couch grass with rye over-seeding for the AFL season. Drainage is excellent (it has to be — Cairns gets 2,000mm of rainfall annually, much of it in March). The wind off the Coral Sea is a factor in afternoon games.
Famous Moments
- Round 14, 2011 — Suns’ inaugural Cairns “home” fixture. Hosted West Coast (Suns lost, but the venue was bedded in for the new club).
- Round 11, 2018 — Suns defeating GWS at Cazaly’s, an upset that briefly suggested Suns finals contention.
- Round 9, 2022 — Touk Miller’s career-best 38 disposals at Cazaly’s against Brisbane.
- The Cairns Footy Festival — annual community event using Cazaly’s as the centrepiece.
- AFL Indigenous Round 2019 — Suns hosting Adelaide at Cazaly’s with Indigenous-themed jumpers and cultural pre-game ceremonies.
The Stadium Itself
Cazaly’s is a tight, modern Queensland footy ground. The eastern grandstand is the main covered seating. The southern grass embankment is where most Cairns locals sit; the family atmosphere is genuine. The corporate facilities are limited but adequate.
Transport is car-only — there’s no rail; shuttle buses run from Cairns CBD on game days. The drive from Cairns Airport is about 12 minutes. The venue is integrated with adjacent recreation facilities including netball courts, baseball fields, and athletics tracks.
Trivia for the Pub

- The song “Up There Cazaly” was written in 1979 — well after Roy’s death — and became the unofficial AFL anthem.
- Cazaly’s Stadium hosts the AFL Cape York College of Cricket annual training camp.
- The venue is 4km from Cairns CBD in the suburb of Westcourt.
- Tropical AFL games at Cazaly’s typically have 30°C kickoff temperatures.
- The pitch has survived five major cyclones since opening (2006 Larry, 2011 Yasi included).
- The 2011 Yasi cyclone caused minor stadium damage but the playing surface was protected.
The Rumours
The persistent rumour: capacity expansion. The Queensland state government has discussed boosting Cazaly’s to 20,000 seats. Funding: speculative. Timeline: post-2030 if at all.
The other rumour: Cazaly’s hosting an AFLW Grand Final. The atmosphere would suit a women’s-comp showpiece, but AFLW Grand Final allocation has historically gone to higher-capacity venues.
The wildcard: second AFL club playing here. Brisbane Lions have been mentioned in long-term planning. Nothing formal.
The Verdict
Cazaly’s Stadium is one of the AFL’s most unique venues. Tropical conditions, the Roy Cazaly heritage naming, the regional Queensland setting — there’s nowhere quite like it. The Suns’ continuing presence in Cairns has been a slow-burn community success.
If you’re visiting Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef, work an AFL fixture into your trip. Sit on the southern grass embankment, drink a stubby in the heat, and find out why Far North Queensland’s small-but-loyal AFL community is some of the most passionate in the country. Up there Cazaly, indeed.
